Reconciliation in Following Peace with People
December 1, 2016
Matthew 5:23-24
“Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.”
Hebrews 12:14
Reconciliation is involved in making peace with people whom you know have been wronged by your actions. This is when you need to make amends with your brother or sister because he or she feels offended by your actions. If for example, you had a business deal with someone, and the other person feels hurt because of your actions in the course of the transactions, you will have to make peace with him or her. Jesus talked about it in today’s opening Scripture. If someone is hurt because of what you did, you cannot continue in prayer with that issue unresolved; you will have to do something about it. This is what reconciliation is all about. It is making peace with people who have been offended or hurt, one way or the other, by your ill actions.
Sadly, some believers erroneously think that because they have been made the righteousness of God in Christ and their sins are forgiven them, they are not obligated to make amends with people who have been hurt because of their ill actions. Yes! You’ve been made the righteousness of God in Christ according to 2 Corinthians 5:21, and the same Scripture tells us in Hebrews 12:14 to follow peace with all men, and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14 is as true as 2 Corinthians 5:21; we cannot embrace one and throw away the other. God says to forgive your brother or sister who has offended you because He doesn’t want you hurting. The same care and concern that God has for you is that which He has towards your brother who has been offended. That’s the reason why you must make every effort to ensure reconciliation with your brother or sister because of his or her good.
My Solid Front (Confession): I declare in the Name of Jesus, that I am a child of peace, because my Father is the God of peace. I follow peace with all men all the days of my life. Amen.
FURTHER MEDITATION: MATTHEW 5:9; 2 CORINTHIANS 5:18-19.
